The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program that provides monthly nutrition benefits. SNAP adds to your food budget and allows you to purchase a variety of healthy foods. SNAP has different names depending on what state you are in.
Some considerations for college students
- Applying for SNAP or CalFresh will not affect immigration or financial aid for anyone in your household.
- Individuals under 22 living with their families must apply with their families
- Financial aid, work-study positions, personal loans that need to be repaid, irregular/occasional money gifts, one-time lump sum of money does not count as income.
- You must be enrolled at least 1/2 time to be considered a student.
- Note: Due to COVID-19, temporary exemptions allow students with a $0 Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or those eligible for state or federal work study programs to be eligible for SNAP.
