Food literacy includes the skills needed to plan, manage, select, prepare, and eat foods.
Plan
The first step is to plan out meals or foods that you want to buy for the week. Planning out your meals is helpful because it means that you know all of the items that you need to buy. Make a list before you go grocery shopping or to a pantry where you can pick your food items because it will help you stick to items you need.

Shopping seasonally can save you money and make sure you are getting the freshest produce.
Manage
Managing food includes gathering, transporting, and storing food so that it can be used when you need it. Managing food also relates to managing your budget for food. It can also relate to how you manage your diet.
Select
Selecting foods based on your dietary preferences and budget. Make sure that the foods fit your lifestyle. You can make healthy food swaps for foods that you enjoy and that are familiar to you.

Prepare
To prepare food you need to make sure you have the correct ingredients and cooking equipment. Make sure you always cook you food to a safe temperature. Check out our food safety guide and resource guide for more information.
